As I’m listening to the first couple of songs on this compilation of vol 1 and 2 of the now famous josh homme’s desert sessions, the first thing that comes to my mind is prog-rock, especially because there’s a lot of experimentation and jamming here, since that is exactly the concept behind these sessions, that doesn’t come as a surprise, although towards the end of the album, the songs turn from progressive and instrumental to real hard rock tunes, so this isn’t definitely a prog-rock album, instead is a recorded jam session that turns out to be real nice to hear.
What’s surprising these days though, it’s the desire of the these musicians to play music just for the fun of it, and that is exactly what can be heard in this album. Besides having fun these guys also know what they’re doing, we’re not talking of any newbies here, they’ve also wrote some very good hard rock songs that with the proper care could become the next radio hit
